Diagnosing Prolonged Pediatric Gastroenteritis

Adenovirus serotypes 40 and 41 (subgenus F) are critical causes of prolonged dehydrating diarrhea in infants and young children, often lasting 10 to 14 days. Rapid point-of-care stool testing differentiates viral enteritis from bacterial dysentery.

Subgenus F Specificity

Serotype 40 & 41 Detection

Unlike respiratory adenoviruses, enteric adenoviruses replicate selectively in the gut. The assay uses monoclonal antibodies targeting enteric hexon epitopes.

  • Exclusively detects gastrointestinal adenovirus strains
  • Identifies causes of persistent watery diarrhea
  • Essential for pediatric gastroenterology workups
Analytical Precision

99.1% Diagnostic Concordance

Extensively validated against clinical ELISA and PCR methods, offering high analytical sensitivity even during resolving viral excretion.

  • Analytical LoD: 1.0 x 10³ TCID50/mL
  • Zero cross-reactivity with Rotavirus, Norovirus, or E. coli
  • Direct fecal extraction in closed collection tubes
Clinic Efficiency

Preventing Inappropriate Antibiotics

Prolonged childhood diarrhea often prompts unnecessary antibiotic regimens. Confirming adenoviral etiology promotes antimicrobial stewardship.

  • Protects developing pediatric gut microbiomes
  • Enables immediate fluid rehydration therapy
  • Same-day dispatch across Dubai & Abu Dhabi

*Note: Enteric adenovirus viral shedding may persist for up to 2 weeks post-symptom onset. Testing is reliable throughout both acute and convalescent diarrheal phases.
Standard Operating Procedure

4-Step Rapid Diagnostic Protocol

Standardized testing protocol for solid or watery stool specimens using pre-dispensed buffer tubes.

1

Stool Sampling

Unscrew collection tube cap. Insert grooved applicator stick into 3 different sites of the stool specimen (~50 mg, 1/4 pea size). For liquid diarrhea, aspirate 50 µL.

2

Buffer Extraction

Re-insert stick into extraction tube containing buffer. Tighten cap securely and shake vigorously for 15 seconds to ensure complete viral dissolution.

3

Cassette Loading

Break off the dropper tip. Invert collection tube vertically and dispense exactly 2 drops (approx. 80 µL) of the sample extract into sample well (S).

4

10-Min Readout

Start timer. Read visual test results at exactly 10 minutes. Do not interpret after 15 minutes as background drying may alter faint line verification.

Result Interpretation Guide

Clear Colorimetric Result Windows

Visual interpretation criteria for pediatricians and nursing staff.

Diagnostic Result Interpretation

Evaluate lines appearing in Control (C) and Test (T) regions.

Positive (Enteric Adenovirus Detected)
Two distinct colored bands: Control line (C) and Test line (T). Indicates enteric adenoviral gastroenteritis.
Negative (No Viral Antigen)
Single colored line at Control (C). No line at Test (T). Patient is uninfected or viral load is below LoD.
Invalid Test
No line at Control (C). Insufficient sample volume or procedural error. Retest with a fresh cassette.

Pediatric Management Pathway

Evidence-based clinical triage decisions.

Prolonged Diarrhea Management
Educate caregivers that adenoviral enteritis often lasts 8 to 14 days; ensure continuous oral electrolyte maintenance.
Antimicrobial De-escalation
Withhold empiric antibiotics. Enteric adenoviruses do not respond to antibacterial therapy; symptomatic care is curative.
Multiplex Consideration
For suspected co-infections during peak winter rotavirus season, deploy the QuRapid Rotavirus & Adenovirus Combo Test.

Contact Clinical Specialist
How does enteric adenovirus differ from respiratory adenovirus?

Enteric adenoviruses (subgenus F, serotypes 40 and 41) specifically infect gastrointestinal mucosa causing persistent diarrhea and vomiting, whereas respiratory adenoviruses cause pharyngitis and pneumonia.

Does this test cross-react with non-enteric adenoviruses or rotavirus?

No. Monoclonal antibodies preferentially target hexon epitopes characteristic of enteric subgenus F, with zero cross-reactivity against respiratory adenoviruses or rotavirus.

What is the clinical sensitivity and turnaround time?

The assay delivers 98.5% sensitivity and 99.3% specificity compared to reference ELISA, with clear visual results ready at 10 minutes.

What packaging configuration is provided?

Each box includes 25 individually sealed cassettes, 25 pre-filled extraction tubes with integrated collection sticks, and instructions for use.
